"getting major critical role vibes from this" - says someone who has only listened to Critical RoleBut Skyjacks is really one of the best actual play pods around right now! There's so much care given to the story. Each city they visit is incredibly fleshed out, down to its own lore and festivals. And the overarching lore of everywhere the PCs visit (fear of the Mariner, reaction to the stars-falling, Luminaries) still makes everything feel tied together. The GM does a great job at giving just enough detail to orient the listener without bogging us down in lore or giving away all the secretsThe folks who play the player characters ALSO do such a good job - each character feels like they could be a protagonist in their own story [not only good acting on their part, but great balancing on the GMs part]. They're all compelling and likable (or lovingly hateable, in the case of Travis) within the story, both in their solo scenes and the scenes they have with one another. With a lot of actual play pods, there's a lot of 'watch 20 episodes until the Stockholme Syndrome hits and it gets good', but the initial hook of episode 1 really drags you in right away. Like, you'd think the base premise of 'pirates but in the air' would be enough, but the characters are thrown into a situation with drama and stakes immediately that is SO good. It's a unique way to start a pod (with the characters all knowing one another and having an immediate reason to stay/work together) and one of the best I've seen.Eagerly following along!
